The re-introduction of the short-haired bumblebee, Bombus subterraneus, to the UK

The short-haired bumblebee, Bombus subterraneus, was last seen in the UK in 1988, and declared nationally extinct in the UK in 2000.

We are partners in the Short-haired Bumblebee Project, which aims to re-create flower-rich grassland in the south-east of England, and re-introduce a nationally extinct bumblebee. We provide the expertise in parasites, and run the quarantine process for the re-introduction, as well as developing the Disease Risk Assessment and Disease Risk Management plan with Dr Tony Sainsbury at the Zoological Society of London.

This project is led by Dr Nikki Gammans and the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, and funded by Natural England and the RSPB. For further information, please follow the link above.
